Fast horse

Fast horse follows the return of the Blackfoot bareback horseracing tradition in a new form: the Indian Relay.

Siksika horseman Allison Red Crow struggles to build a team with second-hand horses and a new jockey, Cody Big Tobacco, to take on the best riders in the Blackfoot Confederacy at the Calgary Stampede

Producer Niobe Thompson encountered the fascinating tradition of Blackfoot horse racing, and the Indian Relay, during research for his trilogy of documentaries on the horse-human relationship: Equus – Story of the Horse. This little known, white-knuckle sport involves bareback racing three or four horses around a dirt track and changing horses each lap by jumping off one and on to another. It’s called “North America’s original extreme sport” for good reason!
