Producer Niobe Thompson encountered the fascinating tradition of Blackfoot horse racing, and the Indian Relay, during research for his trilogy of documentaries on the horse-human relationship: Equus – Story of the Horse. This little known, white-knuckle sport involves bareback racing three or four horses around a dirt track and changing horses each lap by jumping off one and on to another. It’s called “North America’s original extreme sport” for good reason!
